General Information

What is the aim of your work and who in your community do you serve?

Priorities

It is a priority of the Maine Humanities Council to support communities traditionally under-resourced in the humanities, and/or deeply isolated from the wider community. Underrepresented and isolated groups vary in each community. These groups can include people of color; people who identify as LGBTQ+; people who live in rural areas; people with disabilities; people who identify as immigrants or refugees; and people whose first (or only) language is not English.

Please indicate below all types of involvement that apply to your organization or to the scope of this project for each community listed below.

We would like to know in which capacities each community is represented in regards to your work: Staff, Volunteers, In Decision-Making Roles, In Leadership, Served by your organization or project, or if you are Unsure of the involvement of the specific community. Leave blank if there is no involvement from that community.

Black, Indigenous, People of Color
LGBTQ+
People with Disabilities
Recent Immigrants
Incarcerated Individuals (current or recently)
Poor People
People Who Live in Rural Areas
Veterans or Active Duty Military

If you or your organization serve members of communities traditionally under-resourced in the humanities, and/or deeply isolated from the wider community, please tell us about how your work supports these communities.

Project Information

Who do you hope will join this program and why?

What should we read? You name it! There are so many amazing texts that can be read in Discussion Projects—stories long and short, poems, essays, illustrated books, and more. Most groups find it helpful to include at least some fiction (whether a novel or some short stories).

If you’re looking for suggestions, we have a handful of Featured Reads every year. These books are a great starting place for discussing any number of themes that we focus on across our work.

Our Featured Reads are also used in other Maine Humanities programs and events like Readers Retreat and Read ME, so they offer folks in your Discussion Project additional opportunities for participation and connection

Please let us know what text(s) you are thinking about for this project and why you feel this would make a good starting point for discussion.

Having help from other people and organizations can make a Discussion Project more successful and dynamic. Who in your community can help you with this project?

How do you plan to bring your intended audience into the room? How will you publicize? Who will you work with to spread the word?

Additional Information

When planning for your project, remember to be generous with your timeline. Projects should not expect to begin for at least two months after the date you submit your application. There are many touch points between when a project is awarded and the day of your event. Be sure to factor in plenty of time for your speaker to be confirmed, for logistics to be settled, and for audience outreach.

You do not need to have a start date set in order to apply but it is helpful for us to know, in general, when you would like your program to take place. Discussion Project applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. We will be in touch about your proposal within three weeks of applying.
